How to Access the Hidden Symbols on Your iPhone’s Keyboard

How to Access the Hidden Symbols on Your iPhone’s Keyboard

Learn the fastest way to type unusual but useful symbols on the iPhone keyboard.
How to Access the Hidden Symbols on Your iPhone's Keyboard
The iPhone keyboard has a hidden superpower: Beneath its commonly used letters, numbers and symbols is a hidden treasure trove of less common but useful symbols. For example, the next time you want to tell someone how hot or cold the weather is, you don’t need to enter “degrees” or Google degree symbols. You can tap and hold the 0 (zero) key on the iPhone keyboard, and then quickly slide your finger over the degree symbol, as shown in the image above.

Holding down the shortcut key also allows you to use the iPhone keyboard to enter accented characters. Similarly, if you find yourself mentioning different currencies in the same conversation, touch and hold the currency symbol next to the right square bracket key. This will show you some other currencies (€, £, ¥, ₩, and ₽) and US dollars (if it is not the default currency in your area). There are other useful symbols hidden in the keyboard that you may not know.

List of keys to show the hidden symbols

The following is a list of keys that you can long press to show the hidden symbols below:

  • ? reveals the inverted question mark (¿)
  • . (period key) reveals the ellipsis (…)
  • / (forward slash) shows you the backslash (\)
  • ‘ (single quote) can be held to quickly input smart quotes
  • “ (double quotes) reveals smart double quotes, along with forward (») and rewind («) symbols
  • ! (exclamation mark) allows you to see an inverted exclamation (¡)
  • = (equals) shows the unequals (≠) and roughly equals (≈) signs
  • & (ampersand) shows you the section sign, also known as double S (§)
  • % (percentage) lets you type the parts per thousand symbol (‰)
  • – (hyphen) reveals a couple of long dashes (– and —) and a bullet point symbol (•)

If you still don’t have easy-to-access symbols, you can always use iPhone’s built-in text replacement feature. Go to “Settings”> “General”> “Keyboard”> “Text Replacement”, and click the + icon in the upper right corner to add shortcuts to the rare symbols you use frequently.

For example, you can add a trademark symbol (™) next to Phrase and set it as a shortcut. This way, every time you type tm on the iPhone keyboard, the ™ symbol is automatically added.
