RAM has a data transfer speed, which has an effect on its efficiency. There are two types of transfer speeds: SDR and DDR. DDR, or Double Data Rate, is divided into two types: DDR3 Or DDR4
Here’s how you can check if your RAM type is DDR3 or DDR4.
DDR3 And DDR4 Speeds
DDR3 supports transfer or read/write speeds of up to 2133 million transfers per second, while DDR4 supports speeds of up to 3200.
DDR speed is also measured in GBs transferred per second, with DDR3 capable of up to 14.9GB/second and DDR4 capable of 2.6GB/second.
We only need to know the transfer speed that both DDR3 and DDR4 have to offer for our purposes.

Check RAM Type
It’s simple to check RAM type once you know what speeds you should be looking for. Go to the Performance tab in Task Manager. Look at the very top right after selecting memory from the left column. It will inform you of the amount of RAM you have and the type of RAM you have. The system is running DDR3 as shown in the screenshot below.
Because not all RAM is created equal, the DDR3 chip in your system may differ from one in another. The speed it can provide is determined by the chip that is installed. To check the speed, go to the Memory graph and look for a dedicated Speed field that tells you how fast your RAM is.
You can’t upgrade from DDR3 to DDR4 by installing new drivers or doubling your RAM. Software cannot change the speed or type of RAM, just as it cannot change the size of a 500 GB hard disk into a 1 TB hard disk.

DDR3 is often sufficient for most, if not all, needs in many systems. For gaming, or perhaps heavy multimedia rendering, such as 3D modeling or animation work, you only need more, better, or faster RAM, such as DDR4. If you want to improve the speed of your computer, increasing RAM might not be the best option. It is preferable to purchase an SSD. An SSD will help your system run faster than when it was using an HDD and will cost less or about the same as new RAM.
