To play media files encoded with High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), also known as H.265 video, we’ll learn how to install the HEVC (H.265) codec on Windows 11. The official HEVC codecs are not included in Windows 11 out of the box. If you try to watch or play HEVC-encoded video in Windows 11, you’ll probably be unable to do so.
The H.265 (HEVC) codec is a video recording format for iPhones and some 4K Blu-ray discs. In fact, iPhones now record video in HEVC, so it’s gaining a lot of traction.
HEVC codes are available for download from the Microsoft Store, but they cost $0.99 depending on your region. I’m not sure if the price will remain the same in other locations.
You can also download VLC, a popular third-party video player that comes with its own built-in codecs for playing HEVC (H.265) videos. Install VLC if you can’t afford to pay the $0.99 in the Microsoft store.
The new Windows 11 includes a new user desktop with many new features, such as a centered Start menu and taskbar, rounded corners windows, themes, and colors that make any Windows look and feel modern. Follow the steps below to begin installing and enabling HEVC codes in Windows 11.
How to download and install HEVC codes on Windows 11
As previously stated, videos recorded on iPhones and some 4K UHD Blu-ray players may not work on Windows 11. This is due to the fact that Windows 11 is missing crucial codes for playing HEVC or H.265-formatted media.
To watch these videos, you must first download and install the required codecs, which cost $0.99 depending on your location from the Microsoft Store.
Simply open the Microsoft Store by clicking the button on the Taskbar to install the official HEVC video extensions.
Then, as shown below, use the search box to look for HEVC Video Extensions. Then, for $0.99, select the app as shown.

You’ll need a Microsoft account that’s linked to a credit card. Go to your Microsoft account and sign in. Then click Buy with your credit card. Following that, you’ll be able to play HEVC Codecs videos in Windows and any video app.
