The digital name of your machine is an important but frequently forgotten setting. When Windows presents itself on your network and communicates with other devices, it uses the name allocated to your PC. Your PC’s name is usually chosen randomly by the manufacturer by default; you can Rename your Windows 10 Computer to make it easier to identify.

There are several options for altering the name, but using the Settings app is one of the easiest. It can be accessed from the Start menu by selecting the “System” category, then the “About” page at the bottom of the left-hand menu. Scroll to “Device specs” at the bottom of the page.
Under “Device name,” you’ll find your PC’s current name. To alter the name, click “Rename this PC.” Use letters, hyphens, and numbers to create a new name in the popup question. Remember that if you use more than 15 characters in your name, it may be truncated on some devices; try to remain under this length for trouble-free networking.
Because some software will continue to use the old name, the name change will not take full effect until you restart your computer. When you restart Windows, you’ll notice that it has taken on a new identity, and the old name no longer has any influence.
