How to Use Your iPhone As an Official ID

How to Use Your iPhone As an Official ID

September 4, 2021

As long as your state supports it, you can just use your iPhone As an Official ID.

How to Use Your iPhone As an Official ID
In this digital age, why do we still have physical ID cards? When I can use Apple Pay, I don’t need my credit card; I no longer need to use Express Transit’s MetroCard; however, I still need to carry my entire wallet with me, wherever I need a driver’s license. Fortunately, this seems to have changed in iOS 15, because Apple allows official IDs to be added to its Wallet app.

The new function is bound to iOS 15, so it is temporarily unavailable. But we know enough about this; as long as your state supports this feature, Apple will allow you to add your driver’s license or state ID to Wallet. Once added, you can use it when passing through the new secure passage of the participating airport. Although this is the initial use case, we hope that this identification function in e-wallets will be accepted in more ways in the future, such as when buying alcohol or other age-restricted products.

How to add your ID to your iPhone’s Wallet app

Once IOS 15 is released and the wallet ID is online, this is a relatively simple setup process. The initial process for adding other types of app cards is the same, just click the (+) button at the top of the main Wallet screen and follow the instructions to add a license or ID. If you have an Apple Watch, you will also be asked to add the ID for the watch.

Then the IOS will ask you to scan your ID and ask for a selfie. According to Apple, the iPhone safely sends selfies to your state to verify your identity, and as an added layer of security, it will allow you to record a series of head and facial movements. Once your status has verified your identity, your ID will be added to the Wallet application.

Although the ID on the wallet certainly has many potential uses, Apple’s current main idea is to show your license or ID to the TSA when going through airport security. All you need to do is tap your iPhone on the identity reader. When you do this, you will see a message showing the information requested by the TSA. This information will only be released to the TSA after you authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.

Apple insists this feature is secure; All your identity information is encrypted on your device, so it cannot be accessed by third parties. When you share this information with the TSA Identity Reader, the process is also encrypted, so the data is protected during transmission.

States that will let you use ID in Wallet

Currently, the recognition function in the wallet has not been activated because it is unique to iOS 15. There is no timetable for when this feature will be activated; Apple has not confirmed whether this is a one-day feature of iOS 15 or if it will take some time. Prior to this, Apple confirmed that Arizona and Georgia will be the first states in the country to choose Wallet ID.

However, other states are confirmed; they will only take advantage of this feature sometime after Arizona and Georgia. Yes:
