Ping
Ping can fluctuate, from low to high over the course of a day or even an hour, indicating a shaky internet connection (among other things). On Windows 10, we looked at how to set up alarms for excessive ping. On Windows 10, here’s how to see live ping on the taskbar.

View ping on system tray
You’ll need to use an app named PingoMeter to View ping on system tray. It is open-source and free.
- Download PingoMeter from Github.
- Run the app (installation isn’t required).
- The app will add an icon to the system tray.
- If your ping is good, you will see a green graph on the icon.
- If your ping is normal, you will see a yellow graph on the icon.
- If your ping is bad, you will see a red graph.
Configuring PingoMeter
PingoMeter prompts the user to enter a maximum ping value, which is then utilized to define what constitutes a good, normal, or bad ping.
The app, for example, sets the maximum ping at 250 by default. My ping was usually good using this metric. The maximum ping value has been reduced to 100. Within seconds, my connection revealed that it was rotating among good, normal, and terrible ping.
Change the refresh interval from 3000 ms to anything lower to receive a more realistic view of the ping. It can be set to a minimum of 50 milliseconds.

Ping alerts
PingoMeter allows you to set up alerts for when your connection timed out, was lost, and was restored.
To enable these alerts;
- Right-click the PingoMeter icon in the system tray.
- Select Setting.
- Go to Advanced tab.
- Enable the alerts you want to receive.
Change Ping address
PingoMeter requests a response from the Google DNS server by default, which is normal. You can alter the IP address in the app’s settings if you want to use the tool to monitor ping for a certain IP address.
- Right-click the PingoMeter icon in the system tray.
- Select Setting.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Enter the IP address in the Ping IP address field.
- Click Apply.

Conclusion
For live activities, such as a live stream or an online game, ping is critical. A high ping won’t be a problem if you’re only browsing the web, that is, if you’re only accessing static websites. Even for normal surfing, though, there is a limit to how high the ping may go before it causes problems.
